When I was a child, I loved sharpening pencils. I’d turn the handle on my school sharpener, watching as the wood curled away, leaving a sharp point. Each pencil was a new start, ready to capture my thoughts, dreams, and plans. It wasn’t just a writing tool—it was a tool of creation.

Catalyst for Change

19 men changed the face of America, and dare I say the world, forever a little over 20 years ago on September 11, 2001. These men had ulterior motives as they bought tickets for flights in the perceived safe skies of America. These men were committed to their mission, to bring havoc. They were catalysts for change, intentionally or accidentally, this we can all agree on.

12 men changed the face of Jerusalem, and dare I say the world, forever over 2000 years ago. These men were selected by a then said “prophet and teacher,” who we now know is the savior of the world- Jesus Christ. They were called to learn His ways, and then to spread the good news of His saving grace to the Jews and Gentiles. They were catalysts for change, intentionally, this (I hope) we can all agree on.

There is power in numbers, as we're reminded in Deuteronomy 32:30 that one will chase 1000, and two will put 10,000 to flight. As Men all over the world are celebrated today this Father's day, the assignment for us remains the same, to be influential, simply by being catalysts for change (Read Romans 12:2, and Matthew 28: 18-20). Nonetheless, to be a catalyst of change you often need critical mass and unity (spend some time in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27). To go far, they say, is to go with others, as opposed to going fast alone. So here’s the question- who are the men you surround yourself with and what is your collective mission? What will your collective addition be to the future of humanity? What will be written about you all 20 years from now? 200 years from now? 2000 years from now? Who are your band of brothers, and what are you collectively working on?

Find your band of brothers, aka your Men’s fellowship, aka your right circle, and work together to be the catalyst for change in our world today. Happy Father's Day to all.

Time is Unity

In the famous movie "Lucy," Morgan Freeman plays a Medical Scientist that helps a supernatural woman named Lucy pass on the knowledge she's acquired by unlocking portions of her brain previously unknown to men.

About 70 minutes into the movie, Lucy explains to a group of medical scientists that Morgan Freeman's character had put together to learn from her how we as humans have created limits and measures, numerically, to simplify the limitless capacity of life. As she shares that a speeding car that moves fast enough could eventually be invisible to the naked eye, Lucy explains that time is the main factor in understanding our world, not numbers, letters, or standards. Time is what we all have in common. Morgan Freeman gets it, saying, "Time is Unity."

I wrote this on my flight to a friend's 40th birthday trip to St. Lucia. And as I always do, I was reflecting on the amount of time spent in years learning to live life. So here's the question to you, however old you are, how have you spent the time given to you? What knowledge have you added to others? What impact have you made in the lives of others?

Not to worry, though; you still have time. So long there's life, there's time. Think about that today.

Time is Unity

Lessons on Leadership

The concept of leadership is not new to our era. Exodus 18 is filled with lessons of leadership for all. Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, brought Moses' wife and children to see him in the wilderness. (1) It appears Moses had sent his family to his father-in-law for protection, perhaps to allow him to focus on the task at hand.

Upon arrival, Moses showed respect to his father-in-law, kissing his feet and telling him about God’s goodness to the Israelites. (2) One could learn the importance of showing deference to those who have come before you here. Jethro blessed God’s name for what He had done for the Israelites, and the elders joined him as he offered sacrifices to God.

Jethro then observed Moses being the judge, jury, and executioner for over 600,000 men (not to include women and children). This was Moses’ daily task. (3) So Jethro advised him otherwise, for him to appoint leaders and judges at different levels (similar to our current judicial system) who have Godly characters. Sharing this burden would prevent burnout for all. (4) It was recorded that Moses listened to Jethro and called on able men to lead over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.

Moses learned from Jethro’s teachings that God’s assignment for him was (5) not about Moses but God’s people. Moses need not make himself God! God’s work here on earth is too vast for one man to do it all. Leaders must delegate their authority further to other leaders to reach a wider audience. If the goal is to help as many people as you can, you will need as many leaders as possible. May God send able women & men your way as He assigns such daunting tasks, amen.

Often neglected, and rarely discussed are the flaws of a man so great that his level of success is perceived as unattainable to the next generation of leaders.

My family and I spent last week on spring break in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, my boys (image above) and I visited the birth home of Dr King. My first son is enamored by MLK, and he’s expressed some early interest in “fighting for people,” hence the intentional pilgrimage. As I researched further about MLK’s life and times, I stumbled on this very important truth. MLK suffered from mental illness, and reportedly attempted suicide, twice earlier in his life.

Why am I bringing this up? Well, we must all know that no man is perfect, and the journey to perfection is paved with several potholes. Also, we must continue the discussion on the importance of mental health awareness for all. No one is immune to this. So when I hear folks laugh at Tyrese for crying in public, I cringe for the next man going through a similar struggle in silence and pray that those demons never lead him to suicide. Mental Illness is a real issue amongst men. Let’s keep talking about it, often.

Family, A Firm Foundation

Anthony Brandt, a composer and professor, bests put it when he says other things may change us, but we start and end with family. I often share that my six core sectors of life are faith, fitness, family, focus, finance, and friends, in that order. Faith, being your relationship with God (where you came from), and fitness your relationship with yourself, family is the first external factor to consider.

In my podcast interview with @iampraisefowowe , we discussed how a man’s way of life is derived from his culture. Where culture is the way of life of a people, the way of life of any man is derived from the foundation his family had laid for him as a child. “A child is a Tabula Rasa, a blank slate,” said Praise, and so the core of who we are starts from our family up bringing.

So what if you have a faulty foundation, and find that it affects you negatively today? What should you consider doing about it?

1. Understand your past. Find ways to articulate your childhood. Were you scared of your parents growing up, yielding to fear of authority figures today? Use key words to describe your past.
2. Talk to a Counselor. There's so much value in talking to a professional who can help guide you through how to mitigate the effects of your past.
3. Address the First F. Faith is key, and connecting with your Maker, who has the authority to reconfigure your motherboard is likely wise.

Remember, that “Families are like fudge- mostly sweet, with a few nuts”, says Les Dawson. So don't get mad at whatever negative past you might have, it happens.

There’s one certainty in life, death for all. But to know death is to know it’s limitations. Here’s what death is not: death is not the end, it is only a medium to transition from one era to another. What are the options of the final destination after death? It’s simple, heaven or hell. Condemnation or Resurrection.

John 3:16 reminds us that whoever believes in the living Christ shall not perish (condemnation), but have everlasting (resurrection) life. Perish here is condemnation to an unfavorable eternity.

1 Corinthians 15 reminds us of the resurrection body. This body is one that death has no strength over. For life after earthly death is much longer than on this side of eternity. It is our human limitation that makes us so concerned about death, for if we had better understanding, we will embrace its concept as the medium to our everlasting life.

Therefore I beseech you all, that we reflect on what death means. We shall all live to declare the glory of God in this land of the living, but we will also be ushered into our eternal glory at God’s appointed time for us. With that in mind, let’s ensure that we do not perish to condemnation. Accept Christ if you haven’t, and be thankful for His saving grace.

Delay is Not Denial

You've possibly heard a sermon with a similar topic, but this maxim is most commonly attributed to Coach Dawn Staley (U.S. women's national basketball team coach). Her version is somewhat different, saying, "what is delayed is not denied."

As we approach the end of the year, there may still be one or two goals you outlined for yourself earlier in the year that has not materialized.

Nonetheless, here are three ways to keep a positive attitude in order to prevent the delay from being a denial.

1. Remember past testimonies: If we permit ourselves to journey in times past, sincerely, we will find that God has been faithful in many ways in the 4th quarter. Recalling your past testimonies could help you keep hope alive.

2. Speak in the past tense: Speak as though your blessings have arrived. For instance, if your desire is for a new home, affirm that your house is in your possession already. Often used with bad intentions like brainwashing, the concept of validity effect (also known as the illusory truth effect) is presented here: the tendency to believe unsubstantiated information to be real after repeated exposure to such information.

3. Thank God in advance: Knowing your blessings have arrived, the appropriate thing to do is to show gratitude. Why not thank God in advance today for that blessing yet to be seen to the naked eye?

Significance over Success.

We all want to be successful; this is good. But success is rarely ever enough. Ask those who have reached all their goals, they’ll tell you there’s something missing. @johncmaxwell says that something is significance.

Significance is when your success multiplies to become other people’s success. When others are successful as a result of actions you’ve taken, then you’ve achieved significance. Simply put, when your life becomes a blessing to others, you’ve achieved significance.

The Bible reminds us to Love our neighbors as ourselves as the 2nd greatest commandment. Significance is simply living this commandment.

So here’s the question- who do you need to impact today to help be successful? Call them, text them, DM them, bless them.

If you’ve never been rejected, or never lost a battle, or never been told no, you’re not pushing hard enough.

If all you do is reach for achievable goals within your limit, you’re not punching above your weight class.

The Bible reminds us that greater works than these shall you do, so stop being complacent. Don’t accept the status quo. Push past that discomfort and find your true joy on the other side of that temporary pain.

I had the pleasure of joining a 3+ mile prayer walk with a group of men (about 15 men) this past Saturday. If you’re a person of faith, you understand the power of prayer, but of great value is when men (who are typically less likely than women to pray- yes I’m generalizing) actually show up to an advertised prayer walk with no strings attached. My encouragement to you today is to embrace prayer, but to also welcome corporate prayer with like-minded people.

The American Psychiatric Association describes depression as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. I know that sounds depressing (all pun intended), but the glass-half-full perspective says it is also manageable, treatable, and indeed not a death sentence.

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. For some, feeling sad is observed; for others, it is having difficulty thinking, while others lash out in action. Additional symptoms include trouble sleeping, guilt, feeling incomplete, feelings of incompetence, or loss of appetite. Feeling depressed is undoubtedly not a feeling anyone longs to feel.

What to do when feeling depressed? Work with a licensed therapist, reach out to loved ones (social support), and talk to God.

The American Psychiatric Association describes depression as a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think, and how you act. I know that sounds depressing (all pun intended), but the glass-half-full perspective says it is also manageable, treatable, and indeed not a death sentence.

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person. For some, feeling sad is observed; for others, it is having difficulty thinking, while others lash out in action. Additional symptoms include trouble sleeping, guilt, feeling incomplete, feelings of incompetence, or loss of appetite. Feeling depressed is undoubtedly not a feeling anyone longs to feel.

What to do when feeling depressed? Work with a licensed therapist, reach out to loved ones (social support), and talk to God.

In it, witnesses with different points of view, based on location, tried to decipher an assassination attempt. Each one of them saw something different, but the person with the perfect view of it all, clearly saw it all.

Clarity is important to achieving your goal. And having the perfect view where you’re able to see the big picture does help.

Returning to the presence of God:

You cannot vacate the presence of God for a while and try to rush back in at your own convenience.

When my brother got married in Nigeria a few years back, my wife and I flew out for the occasion; it was a relatively short trip as we were gone from Tuesday to Monday of the following week (6days). Through that time, it was difficult to pray, read the bible and dwell in God's presence with all the wedding activities going on. Before the main event however, I had waited on The Lord for 3 days. Side note: many battles are fought long before the D-Day, work at this when you have major events going on in your life.

Because we live our lives in segments it's very easy to walk away from the presence of God. It is only when we are in our normal routine or elements that we're able to stay in God's process, this shouldn't be the case. We should always be in his presence, with the spirit of God in us. When we aren't focused on God or when we are not as spiritually alert as we should things happen that shouldn't typically happen. In addition, when we find ourselves away from God's presence and then try to return quickly in an attempt to reach the holy's of holy we find if difficult to attain our desired state quickly. Just as it took you sometime to migrate away, it'll take sometime to immigrate back in. How then can you speed up the process to prevent the devil from taking charge of your spirit man? Worship! Worship can speed up your elevation into God's full presence. Ushering praises to the King of Kings and Lion of the tribe of Judah will lead the heavens to open the flood gates of blessings unto us. We must work hard to always remain in God's presence, for there alone can we find the fullness of joy we so desire.

Even when you’re not actively thinking about it, there’s a way your subconscious mind internalizes it, and your soul begins to work things out in that direction.

Personally, when I look at things I wrote down many years back and I compare those written thoughts to my life today, it all adds up. The human creation (your body, spirit & soul) are all one, and the most important tool to living your full existence on purpose. Success is Sequential!

It is very easy to misunderstand the 7 streams of income model. Many think the best strategy to achieving success financially and in other fields of life is to do more in different ways. The concept of spread your nest wide and put your eggs in many baskets is as misleading as it seems simple. Building wealth through 7 or more streams of income comes from building one and watching it grow to self-sustainability before embarking on another. Take for instance Apple, the Mac was the first successful product, then came the iPod, and then iPhone, the iPads, and now the iWatch; in addition Apple TV grows in popularity. All products were launched and marketed separately. The point is: to build wealth or yield success in life, learn to take one step at a time, build sequentially not simultaneously.
